RV are very popular in western coyntries. In the weekend, you can see many RV running on the high way, the families like to spend weekend in some remote beautiful place, like the lake side, or in the forest.
So the problems come. How to charge your cellphone, how to cook, how to power the freezer, how to power the airconditioner, how to watch TV…, the old way is to start the enginee, but the enginee is so noise, especially at night. And such behavior is not eco-friendly for the enviroment.
Now many RV will have one solar sytem inside, which includes PV panel, battery, inverter and solar controller.Here I like to talk about solar controller:
First, I like to introduce the function of solar charge controller. The main purpose of solar controller is to protect the battery from overcharging and overdischarging. Overcharging will be dangerous, the pressure inside of battery will be very high. Fortunately many VRLA batteries are applied in such systems, there are valve controlled, when the pressure is high, the valve will open to release the gas. But this is harmful for the battery, which will loss more reaction solution. Same with over discharging, which is harmful to battery, it will lead to sulfation, will shorten battery life span. Now battery is becoming more and more expensive, while PV panel price is dropping every year, so how to protect and prolong battery life is very important. The solar controller is the key solution to keep battery long life.
People like to use light PV panel for RV, because you have to remove them often. Some people like to use film panel, some people like to use folded panels, which are easy to put inside of RV. So if the solar controller’s size is smaller, people like them more. But people like to know the status of battery, they can decide to save energy when battery capacity is low. Before the solar controllers have some LED indicators to show the battery capacitor, but it is not very intuitive. Now more and more people like the LCD display, which looks very beautiful. Now some solar controllers can have blue tooth, people can check the battery capacity easily from the cellphone. Also such solar controllers will keep records of 60 days, so you can know very well about the system condition, that is very helpful to keep the solar system in good condition.
Lumiax is now developing such solar controller, 12/24V, 20A PWM, with LCD, IP65 waterproof level, also with blue tooth inside. The size is flat, so it can be well mounted in folded panels’ back.
