What is a Solar Charge Controller?
Charge controller or we call it regulator is an important part of the whole solar power system. It is designed to protect the battery form overcharge and over discharge. It can regulate the current and voltage coming from the PV, then transit to the battery. For a 12V system, the panel’s Vmp is normally 16V-20V, and it is around 14V-14.5V for a 12V battery to be full charged, if there is no controller’s protection, the battery is easily being damaged
Do you always need a charge controller?
Not always, but usually. Generally, there is no need a charge controller for the small application, such as the 1 to 5-watt panels.
